Call 911
or go to the hospital if nose bleeding
is accompanied by: o A bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes. o Head Injury, or broken nose |

Call your
doctor if nose bleeding is
accompanied by: o Repeated nosebleeds not associated with a cold or other minor irritations |
|
|
Diagnostic tests
that may be performed include: o Complete blood count (CBC) o Partial thromboplastin time measurements (PTT) o Prothrombin (PT) o X-rays of the skull o Nasal endoscopy (examination of the nose using a camera) |

|
Prevention and
self-care: o Do not lay flat or put your head between your legs o Do not blow your nose o Sit down and gently squeeze the soft portion of the nose between your thumb and finger for about 5-10 minutes o Lean forward to avoid swallowing the blood and breathe through your mouth. Wait at least 5 minutes before checking if the bleeding has stopped. o Apply ice (crushed in a plastic bag or washcloth) to nose and cheeks |
