Common
causes of breast lump: o Milk cysts (sacs filled with milk) o Infections (mastitis) o Lipoma (a collection of fatty tissue) o Fibroadenomas o Fibrocystic Breast Disease o Intraductal papilloma: A small growth inside a milk duct of the breast. Often occurs near the areola of women between the ages of 35 and 55.In some cases the only symptom is a watery, pink discharge from the nipple. o Injury: Sometimes if your breast is badly bruised, there will be a collection of blood that feels like a lump.

doctor if breast lump is
accompanied by: o New breast lump during monthly self-exam o Bruising on breast without experiencing any injury o Nipple discharge, especially bloody or pinkish (blood tinged) o Dimpled or wrinkled breast skin (like the peel of an orange) o Inverted nipple (turned inward) o Family history of breast carcinoma |

Diagnostic tests
that may be performed include: o Study of nipple discharge under the microscope o Needle aspiration of a cyst with examination of the fluid under a microscope o Biopsy of the lump o Ultrasound to see if the lump is solid or cystic o Mammogram |

Prevention and
self-care: o Exercise regularly o Reduce fat intake o Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and other high fiber foods o Limit alcoholic beverages to no more than 1 to 1.5 per day |
