   Dry Eye
A condition associated with inadequate tear production and marked by redness of the conjunctiva, by itching and burning of the eye, and usually by filaments of desquamated epithelial cells adhering to the cornea.

Common causes of dry eye: 
o Aging
o Sun exposure
o Smoking or second-hand smoke exposure
o Cold or allergy medicines
o Burns
o Weather (particularly warm, dry, windy)
o Trauma Injury
o Conjunctivitis (such as from infections)
o Dry environment or workplace (wind, air conditioning)

Other Causes of dry eye:
o Neurological Diseases (impaired innervations to the tear gland or eyelid muscles)
Tear Gland Disease:
Tumors or Infiltrative Diseases (e.g. Pemphigoid, Sarcoidosis)
Sjogren's Syndrome (Sicca syndrome):
A chronic autoimmune disease in which white blood cells attack the moisture-producing glands. The hallmark symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, but it is a systemic disease, affecting many organs and may cause fatigue.

Call your doctor if dry eye is accompanied by: 
o Red or painful eyes.
o Flaking, discharge, or a lesion on eye or eyelid
o Trauma to the eye
o Bulging eye or a drooping eyelid
o Joint pain, swelling, or stiffness
o Dry mouth.

Prevention and self-care: 
o Try artificial tears, drops or ointment
o Don't smoke, avoid second-hand smoke
o Avoid direct wind, and air conditioning
o Use a humidifier, especially in the winter
o Purposefully blink more often, est your eyes
