Definition: Gas is the air in the intestine that is passed through the rectum. Belching is passing air from the digestive tract through the mouth. |

Common
causes of gas: o Swallowing air while eating o Dyspepsia (Burning sensation or discomfort in the upper abdomen) o Eating foods that are difficult to digest, such as fiber o Lactose Intolerance o Antibiotics o Dietary Fat, Starchy Grains o Pancreatic Insufficiency o Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): A chronic functional disorder of the colon that is considered to be of psychophysiological origin and marked by diarrhea or constipation or diarrhea alternating with constipation, abdominal pain or discomfort, abdominal bloating, and passage of mucus in the stool; called also irritable colon, irritable colon syndrome, mucous colitis, spastic colon.

accompanied by: o Abdominal or rectal pain o Heartburn, nausea, vomiting o Diarrhea, constipation o Weight loss o Oily, foul-smelling, or bloody stools |

Prevention and
self-care: o Eat slowly o Chew your food thoroughly o Avoid gum chewing o Relax while you eat o Avoid beans, cabbage, and carbonated beverages o Try Beano, an over-the-counter product, if you eat a lot of beans, fruits, vegetables, and other high-fiber foods. o Walk for 10 to 15 minutes after eating o Drink peppermint or chamomile tea after a meal |

include: o Simethicone, Phazyme, Flatulex, Mylicon, Gas-x, Mylanta Gas o Erythromycin, E-mycin, Eryc, Ery-tab, Pce, Pediazole, Ilosone o Metoclopramide (Reglan) |
