Definition: A yellowish pigmentation of the skin, tissues, and certain body fluids caused by the deposition of bile pigments that follows interference with normal production and discharge of bile (e.g. Hepatitis) or excessive breakdown of red blood cells (e.g. Hemolytic anemia, sickle-cell anemia). |

Common
causes of jaundice: o Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism o Breastfeeding jaundice (in infants, usually in first week of life) o Breast milk jaundice (in infants): Jundice that may occur during the second or third week of infants' life o Newborn jaundice (physiologic jaundice) o Gallstones o Pregnancy o Viral hepatitis: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and hepatitis E o Human Immunodeficiency Virus o Pancreatitis o Drug-induced hepatitis: Erythromycin sulfa drugs, antidepressants, anti-cancer drugs, Aldomet, rifampin, steroids, chlorpropamide, tolbutamide, oral contraceptives, testosterone, Isoniazide, propylthiouracil. o Hemolytic Anemia: Anemia caused by excessive destruction of red blood cells because of chemicals, infections, or autoimmune diseases, e.g. Spherocytosis, Sickle Cell Anemia, Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency.
