   Tremor
 
Definition:
A trembling or shaking usually from physical weakness, emotional stress, or disease.
There are three types of tremors:
o Resting or static tremors ( Tremor at rest)
o Intention tremors (Tremor that starts with moving, and stops at rest)
o Postural tremors ( Tremor when a body part is in a particular position for a period of time.
Medical terms related to tremor :
Intention Tremor, Postural Tremor, Rest Tremor, Shakes, Shaky Feet, Shaky Hands, Trembling
 
Common causes of tremor: 
o Normal aging
o Too much coffee or other caffeinated drink
o Stress, anxiety, or fatigue ,these can cause a postural tremor.
o Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
o Low blood sugar
o Hyperthyroidism
o
Parkinson's Disease:
This is the classic cause of a resting tremor and is often accompanied by slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and an abnormal gait.
o Medications that can cause tremor:
Mood stabilizers such as lithium carbonate, Bronchodilators such as theophylline and Alupent, Anticonvulsants such as valproic acid and Depakote, Immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine

Other Causes of tremor:
o Alcohol or Drug Withdrawal
o Cerebellar Disease (Intention Tremor)
o Brain Tumors
o
Familial Tremor:
Benign Essential Tremor, usually begins in middle age or late in life
o
Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
A demyelinating disease marked by patches of hardened tissue in the brain or the spinal cord and associated especially with partial or complete paralysis and jerking muscle tremor.

 

Call your doctor if tremor is accompanied by: 
o The tremor is worse at rest and gets better with movement
o Prolonged or severe tremor
o Headache, weakness, abnormal tongue motion
o Involuntary movements

 
Diagnostic tests that may be performed include: 
o Blood tests such as CBC with blood differential
o Thyroid function tests
o Glucose test
o Urine tests
o Head CT scan
o MRI of the head
o EMG or nerve conduction studies

 
Medications for tremor may include: 
o Levodopa-carbidopa (Sinemet)
o Atenolol (Tenormin)
o Beta Blockers
o Metoprolol, Lopressor, Toprol Xl
o Propranolol (Inderal) La
